Right before the whole hype of the Mayan calender predicting the world would end on December 21, 2012, and not even having that in mind, I ventured down to Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya, Mexico to see one of the new seven wonders of the world, the Mayan ruins pyramids, and believe it or not, since I planned and bought the trip at the end of 2011, pre-end-of-the-world-hype, the trip was actually quite cheap. Navigating around the area was quite easy, and the Spanish that I had studied in high school was showing to be quite useful. The ruins are amazing, and the whole empire and story around them is absolutely amazing and hard to believe. Also, please note, that if you take the tour of the ruins, which is about an hour and a half bus ride with a tour group, we had the chance to stop at a local hotel just outside of Chichen Itza, that served some of the best, absolute best authentic Mexican cuisine I’ve ever had. Ask me what the name of the place was, and I couldn’t tell you.
